The general public thinks schizophrenia means:
Psycho, Wacko,Split Personality,"Gollum"

Accodring to the dictionary:
schiz·o·phre·ni·a
  1. Any of a group of psychotic disorders usually characterized by withdrawal from reality, illogical patterns of thinking, delusions, and hallucinations, and accompanied in varying degrees by other emotional, behavioral, or intellectual disturbances. Schizophrenia is associated with dopamine imbalances in the brain and defects of the frontal lobe and is caused by genetic, other biological, and psychosocial factors.
Schizophrenia is a severe and crippling mental illness. Patients are unable to reason logically, to organise and communicate their thoughts, and therefore are unable to "funtion normally" in society. However, Schizophrenia is NOT a split personality, contrary to popular belief.
Many famous people suffered from Schizophrenia, and successfully supressed and controlled it. This proves that Schizophrenia is not a life-threatening disease and it is not the end of the world when one discovers that he/she is suffering from it.

Can Children Have Schizophrenia?

Children over the age of five can develop schizophrenia, but it is very rare before adolescence. Although some people who later develop schizophrenia may have seemed different from other children at an early age, the psychotic symptoms of schizophrenia hallucinations and delusions are extremely uncommon before adolescence.
